While working on this web site I was thinking back to my elementary school days. I remember I had a teacher, I believe it was in second grade, who liked to pass out word search puzzles.

I always loved it when she did. I would zip through those puzzles looking for the hidden words as if I were searching for buried treasure. I would start by “reading” the puzzle looking for obvious hidden words, crossing them off as I went.

There were always those elusive words though that no matter what you just couldn’t find. Then I would have to resort to “desperate measures” going across row by row looking for the first letter and then looking at the nine letter spots around it for the second letter. Effective, but slow.

I hate to admit it, but I would on occasion sneak a peek at my neighbor’s puzzle. Not at the beginning, but later on as they were further into the puzzle. One glance could tell you so much!

It was with these memories in mind that I encouraged my husband who programmed the software to come up with a way that kids couldn’t cheat. He came up with a brilliant way that makes it simple to create as many puzzles as you need, each identical in their word list but different in their solution.

Now if only my teacher would have given us word search puzzle tests!
